Homeschool Laws

Updated: Sep 22, 2020

Compliance with state laws is mandatory. Laws vary from state to state. Some states have very little oversight or regulations, while other states are under strict governance. Knowing the homeschool laws in your state is the very first place to start as you begin your homeschool journey or transition from public or private schools. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association has amassed all of this information in one easy to access place.

Being involved in the legal process is also important. Be in the know. If your homeschool laws feel too restrictive or invasive, take action. Call your congressmen. Rally the homeschool troops to effect change for your community. Include your children in the process where appropriate. What a great teaching opportunity about advocating for your freedoms.

Homeschooling was hard-won around the 1980s by regular families just like mine and yours who demanded the right to raise and educate their children. Parents were actually imprisoned. Let's not sit idly by and watch as these freedoms are slowly stripped away from us.

“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” ― Haile Selassie I

HSLDA

If all this legal talk feels a little overwhelming, fear not! Help is available, not only to help to ensure you are complying with your state's laws but also to assist and represent you if you ever find yourself in a legal situation. I highly recommend joining the Home School Legal Defense Association. They are the leaders in protecting and securing the legal rights of homeschool families and are supported primarily through membership. Even if you never need legal assistance from them, they are a wealth of information and resources. And you have the opportunity to help other homeschool families who do need legal assistance and financial support as it relates to homeschooling. That is my shameless plug for HSLDA.

Go join now. It is worth every penny. Your children's futures and family's freedom are invaluable.
