What is Homeschooling?

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

Homeschooling at its core is simply parent-directed education that is customized to meet the needs of each individual child and family. Homeschooling typically reaches far beyond academics and delves into the depths of whole child education that often includes character building, behavior and habit training, discipleship, interest exploration, work studies, child-led learning, and so much more. Parent directed education does not always mean the parents are the only, or even the primary, educator. Many families enlist the support of co-ops, specialist or experts in a variety of fields, support groups, teachers, therapists, other family members (it’s not uncommon of older children to be responsible for teaching younger children or siblings a certain subject or skill to reinforce what they have learned - if you can teach it, you know it), or a myriad of others. Parent directed means parents are responsible for determining what and how their children are educated with complete authority, although they still must comply with state homeschooling laws.
